Kings River-Hardwick School Districts

Dog Food Challenge

Kings River-Hardwick School implemented the Character Counts program at the start of this school year.  Throughout the year, students and staff have focused on particular pillars of good character.  Earlier this month, students took time to focus on the Responsibility Pillar.  Students participated in lessons and activities in their classrooms and in a school assembly.

Students and teachers in 6th, 3rd, and Kindergarten prepared skits and songs to emphasize the meaning and importance of being responsible.  In addition, students learned about the importance of being a responsible pet owner and about the services that animal shelters provide for their communities.  Students learned that our local SPCA needs about 25 pounds of dog food a day to feed all of the dogs in their care.

As a result, students were presented with the challenge of bringing in as much dry dog food as possible.  The results were amazing!  Students, parents, and staff members were seen lugging in bags and bags of dog food for the next week.  In the end, the school brought in 8,385.7 pounds!  Mr. Portugal?s 7th graders, Mrs. Mendes?s 4th graders, and Mrs. Brewer?s 1st graders wound up winning the challenge.  The big winners though were all of our four-legged friends at the Hanford SPCA.

Due to the massive success of the challenge, the school has decided to make this an annual event.  ?This was a truly incredible experience where I felt so honored and proud to represent our school,? said Samantha Mendes, 4th Grader Teacher and KR-H Character Counts Coordinator.

Up next for Character Counts at Kings River-Hardwick school is a closer look at the Caring Pillar.  Students and staff will be participating in a Locks of Love hair-cutting drive and several other activities.
